Federal Government Holds Forum on Homeless Veterans

Goal of Eliminating Homelessness among Veterans
News Release: Dept. of Veterans Affairs, December 7, 2010

More than 400 participants from across the country are expected to take part in a two-day national forum on ending homelessness among Veterans by strengthening preventative measures and collaboration among government and private-sector organizations. Participants will work together in planning how to increase access to stable and affordable housing; expand economic security; improve health care; and change the nation’s system for dealing with homelessness. Among many programs, the VA has created a national hotline for homeless Veterans 1-877-424-3838 which is staffed around the clock, seven days a week. Responders can help callers find food, shelter, clothing and other assistance for homeless Veterans.



National Caregiver Support Line

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs is pleased to announce the launch of a toll-free National Caregiver Support Line 1-855-260-3274. The Caregiver Support Line was created to recognize the significant contributions made by caregivers allowing Veterans to remain at home surrounded by family and friends. Open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time; licensed clinical social workers will be available to answer your questions, listen to your concerns and directly link you to the Caregiver Support Coordinator at your local VA Medical Center. Each VA Medical Center has a Caregiver Support Coordinator who can locate assistance tailored to your unique situation. We encourage you to call the National Caregiver Support Line at 1-855-260-3274. We look forward to hearing from you.



Robin Umberg appointed deputy secretary for veterans homes

Robin Umberg, of Villa Park, has been appointed deputy secretary for veterans homes with the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet). Umberg retired from the United States Army in June 2010 after 36 years of active and reserve services. With the Army Reserve, she served as chief of professional services for the 3rd Medical Command, commander for the 4211th and 6252nd United States Army Hospitals and chief nurse of the 18th Field Hospital. During 13 years of active duty, Umberg served as a nurse and training officer and was inducted into the Order of Military Medical Merit and received a legion of merit medal. Umberg was appointed to the board of visitors for the United States Military Academy by President Bill Clinton, serving from 2002 to 2004. Read the rest of this entry



DMV Now Offers Veteran’s Plates Online

SACRAMENTO – The State of California’s specialized veteran’s license plates are now available for purchase online. Previously, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in conjunction with the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) has offered these specialized license plates through in person and mail-in sales only. This new online system of purchasing will make it easier for all California motorists to show their support for veterans and the men and women serving in our military. Read the rest of this entry



Case Study Published on HUD-VASH Program in D.C.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)’s Homelessness Resource Exchange (HRE) – a portal for information and resources on assisting people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless – has published a case study of HUD-Department of Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program implementation in Washington, D.C. The D.C. VASH Plus program model demonstrates how communities can succeed in housing vulnerable homeless clients when committed partners work together to use existing resources in innovative ways. Among the lessons learned, this model underscores the importance of: Engaging key community partners (the VA, CoC and PHA) in a proactive partnership. Using flexible case management services and resources in a community system. Creating an inventory of housing options for prospective voucher recipients. Read the rest of this entry



VA Processing Hundreds of Applications for New Family Caregiver Benefits in First Week

WASHINGTON – In the first week for open applications, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has assisted more than 625 Veterans, Servicemembers and their Family Caregivers in applying for new services under the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act 2010. “We are off to a good start having helped hundreds to apply, but we know there are thousands more who will qualify and need to apply today,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K.
